Holidays Greetings from AFPVO
We salute your continuing interest in and generosity towards Pro Vita as the Tanases and staff address the numerous challenges imposed by almost two years of COVID-19. Our gratitude and thanks to our most recent contributors: Fotini C., James and Beth M., Wendell B., Adrienne F., and Leigh & Dennis M. All of these individuals have contributed multiple times and their faithfulness to Pro Vita is awesome!
Current projects underway at Pro Vita include the refurbishment of a van which will be used to pick up in-kind donations — critical to reduce cash expenditures — and the construction of an outdoor basketball court at the Social Center (SC) in Valenii de Munte. The government-imposed requirement to sheath the SC in fire retardant cladding is also underway but supply chain issues have impacted receipt of the materials.
Although the SC has been occupied for several years, there was no money to build any recreational facilities. The unpaved driveway and courtyard was the only space available for games and ball-playing by the middle and high school residents. A professional basketball player, living in Valenii, has been coaching some of the Pro Vita residents after school but the kids and teens lacked any place to practice. Labor shortages in Romania delayed the start of the court’s construction and, depending on the severity of the winter, completion may not occur until Spring.
Mihail Tanase has worked diligently to solicit donations of the needed construction material but the laborers must be paid and specialty equipment purchased.
Although Romania overall has a low vaccination rate, Pro Vita has vigorously pursued vaccinating its residents and has a very low incidence of Covid-related illnesses.
We encourage you to consider being a SECRET SANTA for the young people living at Pro Vita and sending a donation to ensure the court’s completion and build up our reserve for future building needs.
Finances at Pro Vita are still tight as Romania’s economy has not yet recovered from the effects of COVID-19 and the labor drain. AFPVO’s ongoing financial support has been one of the few bright spots as Pro Vita had relied on both monetary and in-kind donations from Romanians to cover daily expenses.
